Call for continent-wide review of electoral processes

16-Mar-2008 -

After a briefing on the evolution of the mediation process in Kenya by Chief Mediator Oluyemi Adeniji in Addis Ababa, the African Union's Peace and Security Council published a communique requesting the African Union Commission to begin a reflection on the challenges linked to the tension and disputes that often characterize electoral processes in Africa. The reflection should include the strengthening of the African capacity at national, regional and continental levels to observe and monitor elections.

In the same communique, the Council called on the parties in Kenya to continue in their spirit of cooperation and dialogue and to ensure a complete end of violence. The Council also called on the parties to ensure a full implementation of the Agreements relating to long-term issues of land reform, poverty, inequity and combating regional development imbalances. The Council further appealed to the international community to continue to support Kenya particularly regarding the return of Internally Displaced Persons and refugees to their homes or other parts of Kenya.
